In this hot weather it's good to drink more, but did you know that bottled mineral water is much worse for the environment than tap water? There are drinking fountains all over campus, and the University has carried out hundreds of checks to ensure you can refill your water bottles from any tap that doesn't have a warning. Tap water is free at all EUSA bars and most restaurants. Whether you refill a plastic bottle you've used, or purchase a specially designed refillable bottle, drinking tap water can save you hundreds of pounds sterling and help to reduce your impact on the environment. What's the difference? Bottled water costs 600 times more than tap water, and has a 500 times greater impact on the environment. 1 litre of bottled water costs the same as 800 litres of tap water. 1 litre of bottled water has the same impact on the environment as 500 litres of tap water. Isn't bottled water better for me? Last year Edinburgh's tap water supply was one of the cleanest in the UK, passing 99.94% of tests. It has no added fluoride and is supplied entirely by natural springs, lakes and reservoirs. No tap water in the UK is recycled from sewage. More information about water safety . If you're worried about chemical contamination in plastic bottles, read this article produced by the NHS or buy a metal container. The science Saving refers to 52kg CO2e per person per year, based on an average of 5 bottles per week per year at 0.22kg CO2e per bottle. Emissions factors are from Green Things and checked against DEFRA figures. Edinburgh's water supply was checked by the Drinking Water Quality Regulator for Scotland, to check your supply visit Local Water Quality and search for "Edinburgh". Take the train instead of the plane Colour in 2 footprints on your wallchart. Click to download a free wallchart. Our Carbon Footprint Survey showed that flights make up a huge portion of our University's impact on the environment. If you don't own a car, then swapping your ticket can make a huge difference. Isn't the train more expensive? Sometimes this is true, but fairly often once you get to Europe the train is one of the cheapest options. Also, if you take a sleeper train you can get a room for the night /and /transport for less than the cost of a hotel room and a flight. Plus, you can get huge travel discounts, with 10% off 16-25 Railcards until December 2010 and Culture Connect for even more discounts this summer. Isn't the train slower? No! The plane is faster in the sky, but once you include check-in, security and the distance between the airport and most cities, flying can often be slower. The Telegraph tested this with a race from London to Paris, and the train won. * * The science Saving refers to 320kg CO2e for a return flight to central Europe versus 214kg CO2e by train. Extra miles are included to account for the larger distance a train must travel. Emissions factors from DEFRA . It's also *cheaper *and *healthier *for you to eat a bit more veg What's the difference? Meat has a pretty big impact mainly because of all the food animals eat in their lifetime. Whiter meats like chicken are also lower carbon than red meats like beef, but cheese is just as bad. All the low carbon options are also the healthy ones, so eating a bit less red meat and cheese can help you to stay fit. Eating one meat free day a year would save you at least 3 footprints. For a one minute motivation of why you should come, watch thisshort movie! Thanks! Sophie, Femke, Mirella, Jeroen, Susi and Laura Young Friends of the Earth Europe -- *1. The purpose of the convergence* The event is being organised by Young Friends of the Earth Europe and a team of volunteers and Belgian based activists, to bring together and build the European youth movement for climate justice, in reaction to the UN negotiations taking place. It will be an opportunity to share and develop an understanding of what climate justice is and means, build links between activists across Europe and the world to take these demands further, and build a voice and reaction against the UN Climate talks without travelling to Canc?n itself. Our call for climate justice goes far beyond the scope of the official UN summit! Independent of the results in Canc?n could achieve, there is a need to build our own capacities in order to build a strong and diverse climate justice movement based on real solutions, coming from real people and from the bottom up. This is reflected in the programme and topics that will be explored there- which you will find out more about in detail below. *2.
